Battle of the Sexes free essay sample

The concept of being a man, and the idea of manliness, has been debatable in recent decades due to acts of feminism. Paul Theroux wrote Being a Man and was very opinionated as he said the idea of manliness was wrong and oppressive. Harvey Mansfield wrote The Partial Eclipse of Manliness, and stated that the concept of being manly has diminished and been overpowered by feminism. Both of these readings have provided valid and doubtful points in the discussion of what constitutes being manly, as well as how North American culture views the stereotypical man. Both authors are very opinionated and biased in their readings as they do not have any outside sources supporting their beliefs, but they do make effective arguments which further their attitude and outlook on manliness. In Paul Theroux’s reading Being a Man, it is stated that man can be categorized as stupid, arrogant, and much like pre-historic cavemen. We will write a custom essay sample on Battle of the Sexes or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Theroux continued to say that if someone were born as a man, there would be limits of what he is physically, emotionally, and mentally capable of. His highly personal view of how men act relates to a time when men were expected to aspire to be the so-called perfect man. The stereotypical perfect man is theoretically defined as brash, built, strong, athletic, and overall a poor loser when it involves any form of competition. It is also claimed that the typical man should be stupid, unfeeling, obedient, and ultimately soldierly. Theroux argued that these qualities eventually create poor husbands, sadists, and potentially rapists. Although this could happen, it is very unlikely that the majority of men with those characteristics will end up malicious and violent like Theroux stated. Mansfield’s approach to the deterioration of masculinity faulted women. He believed manliness is dubious as women over the years have been referred to with manly intentions. He felt that feminism has not only succeeded, but dominated current culture. For example, policemen and mailmen are no longer in existence, but rather they are police officers and mailpersons. Mansfield thought the concept of manliness had diminished to the point of becoming obsolete. He felt the concept of manliness, being strong, emotionless, and violent, cannot include women. He wanted women to continue to be meek, petit and frail; the direct opposite of what his ideal man is supposed to be. As a view from people who have rarely been referred to as masculine, many women are able to offer an unbiased honest opinion when it comes to the broad term of being manly. As someone who has never personally been associated with masculinity, I feel these readings present both current and outdated views on what manliness is. Both readings had a similar message of establishing man but they portray them in different ways. Theroux’s reading expressed how he felt uneasy, unsure, and apprehensive when it came to the term manly as he viewed it as degrading. As a woman’s perspective, I feel that the term manly is far from shameful or dishonourable. A manly man is something many women look for in a prospective partner as a shy, emotional, and weak male is undesirable. This is not because women are too concerned with physical appearance and mental capacity, but because women are wired to look for mates with these qualities. This dates back to days of cave men and women when language was limited and appearances were the only means of finding a mating partner. In my view, it appears that Theroux is attempting to understand the term â€Å"being a man† at face value while disregarding the fact, that not everyone associates a man with the qualities he has previously stated. In comparison to Theroux’s reading, Mansfield concentrated more on the aspect of how manly qualities are being given to women. Women are now able to take on the characteristics of being masculine and as a result, the definition of being a man has been altered and is unclear. Mansfield’s reading demonstrates a fear of being second-rate in comparison to female counter parts when in truth he has nothing to be concerned over. In my opinion, his panic of inferiority in unnecessary as women will always be considered the lesser sex. Regardless of how much effort is put into gender equality, women will always be initially seen as soft and sweet while men will be primarily viewed as rough and tough. Both Theroux and Mansfield refer to the same point but in different ways: Are men to just live with this degraded status? If women can take on the characteristics of being manly then what makes a man? Being manly is in no way considered a degraded status from my perspective, but a term of affection instead. As for women taking on characteristics of being manly, I feel they choose to be referred to masculine. It does not deteriorate the idea of men being manly but rather makes women much more like man. The authors have very old fashioned views of how a modern culture should be when they state: a male should be masculine and a female should be feminine.

Timothy Brown Essays - Leadership, , Term Papers

Timothy Brown Mr. Hurt Leadership April 5, 2016 Servant Leadership I chose my girlfriend to help me with the servant leadership questionnaire. From the Greenleaf's definition of servant leader, servant leadership is to serve others first before serving oneself. The reason I chose my girlfriend to help me out with this questionnaire is because I feel she know me and been around me longer than my coworkers. My first score for emotional healing is a twenty-four, which is high. Emotional healing is recognizing others' problems and taking time to address them. I strongly agree that others will sometime seek help from me if they had a personal problem. I always care about others' personal well-being. Whenever a friend or coworker need help I always make time to talk to others on a personal level. After being around people for a while I can sense when something is bothering them or their not in a good mood. My second score is a fourteen with creating value for the community. The reason my my score is so low in this category is because I hardly take on extra-curricular activities around my community. I somewhat emphasize the importance of giving back to the community. I rarely show an interest in helping people in the community. Being a fairly new student to Columbus State, I'm not really involved in the activities there are around school. Since I'm not really involved with the community I rarely encourage others to get involved. When it come to having conceptual skills, I have a high score of twenty-three in this area. From working at Best Buy now for nine months I can tell when something is not going right with the organization. Within my organization I can solve some of the complex situations that come my way. I strongly agree when it comes to having a thorough understanding of the organization and its goals. When working for any business I think it is important to understand their goals. I have a moderate score of twenty-two when it come to empowerment. Empowering is allowing followers the freedom to be independent, make decisions on their own, and be self-sufficient. When there is a new employee I always give them some responsibility to make decisions about their job. I think it is important to allow others to handle important work decisions on their own. When you allow others to make decisions it give the organization a sense of diversity. Even if I think different about a certain thing, I always allow others to handle situations in ways they feel is best. People don't have to always consult me when it comes to making a decision about work. In the fifth category, with helping followers grow and succeed I scored a high score of twenty-five. I always ask people what are their career goals and what they going to do to fulfill that goal. Encouraging others to reach their career goals is important to me. Providing other with work experience that enables them to develop a new skill is essential. This couple help the organization grown overall. Being knowledgeable with other people career goals is important. Sometimes its important to put other before yourself. When it comes to putting my followers before myself I scored a nineteen. With servant leadership its imperative to put others first. I often do care about the success of others than my own. I somewhat put others' best interest above my own. This is something I could work on, because I sometime look out for myself first. Sometime I sacrifice self interest to meet others' need. I always do what I can to make any of my coworker's job easier. Doing what I can to help others in my workforce it important to me. The last category is behaving ethically, with my score in this area is moderate. When at work I hold high ethical standards. Being an ethical leader can help you sleep better at night. I agree when it comes to be being always honest while at work. I strongly agree that I will never compromise ethical principles in order to meet success. Doing the wrong thing just to get ahead at work is not the right thing to do. Valuing honesty more than

Alberty Einstein Essays - Albert Einstein, Sigma Xi,

Alberty Einstein ALBERT EINSTEIN Albert Einstein was one of the greatest scientists of all time. Best known as a physicist for developing his famous theory of relativity, Einstein was born on March 14, 1879, in Ulm, W?rttemberg, Germany. When he was five years old, his father showed him a pocket compass. Young Einstein was deeply impressed by the mysterious behavior of the compass needle, which kept pointing the same direction no matter which way the compass was turned. He later said he felt then that ?something deeply hidden had to be behind such things.? Einstein attended public school in Munich and in Aarau, Switzerland. He then studied mathematics and physics at the Swiss Polytechnic Institute in Zurich, graduating in 1900. From 1902 until 1909 he worked as an examiner at the Swiss Patent Office in Bern. While this job had little to do with physics or math, it gave him two things. First, he got to see some of the important inventions of the day; second, he had an abundance of free time, which he spent in scienti fic investigations. (Kevles) During this time Einstein made three of his greatest contributions to scientific knowledge. In 1905, Einstein contributed three separate papers to Annalen der Physik (Annals of Physics), a German scientific periodical. Each of the three became the basis for a new branch of physics. One, for example, suggested that light could be thought of as a stream of tiny particles. This idea would become an important part of the quantum theory. Another concerned Brownian motion, an irregular motion of microscopic particles suspended in liquid of gas, which confirmed the atomic theory of matter. The last paper, titled ?The Electrodynamics of Moving Bodies,? discussed one of Einstein's most famous brainchildren: relativity, more specifically the special theory of relativity. The paper demonstrated the relativity of time, a previously unimaginable idea. Einstein once explained relativity very simply as, ?When you are courting a nice girl an hour seems like a second. When you sit on a red-hot cinder a second seems like an hour. That's relativity. Later, in 1915, Einstein announced that he had developed a general theory of relativity based on his special theory. This general theory attempted to express all laws of physics by equations that have the same mathematical form regardless of the system of reference to which they are applied. In yet another study published in 1905, Einstein put forth his most famous equation of all, the equivalence of mass and energy, E=MC2, in which Energy is equal to mass times the speed of light squared. (Kevles, Biography.com, Quoteland.com) Einstein was a brilliant physicist. He used mathematical properties to explain things that happen throughout the universe. His theories of relativity, which were essentially mathematical formulas, revolutionized the modern world of physics. His energy mass conversion, the basis of nuclear physics and perhaps the most famous equation ever, has brought humanity as a whole into an entirely new era ? the nuclear age. Through his mathematical genius, Einstein forever changed how humans live their lives and understand the universe. After living such a brilliant life, Einstein died on April 18, 1955 in America.
